This free lecture is part of the Aurora Public Library's Power of One Perspective lecture series. President John Adams tried to extend his party's influence by appointing dozens of staunch Federalists to judgeships on the eve of Thomas Jefferson's inauguration. The first and most successful “court-packing” maneuver in American history unexpectedly led to the first Supreme Court case to overturn an act of Congress. Learn how the “weakest branch” of government gave itself veto power over the other two, how that power has been used (or abused?), and what the judiciary owes to John Adams. Presented by Margaret Uchner, coordinator of legal studies at the Community College of Aurora, and Tim Wilkerson, who teaches in the legal studies program at the college. Contact 303-739-6600 for more information.
