President John Adams tried to extend his party's influence by appointing dozens of staunch Federalists to judgeships on the eve of Thomas Jefferson's inauguration. The first and most successful court-packing maneuver in American history unexpectedly led to the first Supreme Court case to overturn an act of Congress. Learn how the weakest branch of government gave itself veto power over the other two, how that power has been used (or abused?), and what the judiciary owes to John Adams. Presented by Margaret Uchner, coordinator of legal studies at the Community College of Aurora, and Tim Wilkerson, who teaches in the legal studies program at the college.

Details: This free lecture is part of the Aurora Public Library's Power of One Perspective Lecture Series. In his farewell address to the nation, President George Washington warned of the evils of factionalism. Despite his warning, the American political landscape quickly developed into a two-party system that looks strikingly similar to the partisan politics of today. Why does America have a two-party system and can a third party ever really be viable? This talk explores the evolution of the two-party system in the United States and addresses the electoral peculiarities of a winner-take-all system that all but ensures a minor role for third parties in the U.S. Presented by Bobby Pace, adjunct faculty member in political science at the Community College of Aurora.
